Natalie Duke, Geography lecturer.

Los Angeles, the country of fun, the country of interesting people. Yes, the state that almost wanted to change its name to the country of entertainment. Luckily enough, it didn’t, therefore keeping something called dignity for those who inhabitated such a state. The state itself wasn’t interesting for Natalie Duke, the geoghraphy teacher wasn’t here to blow her pension on the slots, or even go on a night out.

The state offered a diverse range of people, places, and land-mark locations. Therefore, she wanted to see all of them before she came to a conclusion about coming back to England, or even setting up her own school in another foreign country. The state was beautiful in the day, the sun always shun, and it was always a necessity to wear short-pants and sunglasses. But then again, when wasn’t it for a thin-sized woman of Natalie’s age. Yes, there was no point lying about it, Natalie was perfect, she was so slim and slender that she could be a model. Therefore it didnd’t matter what she wore, because the clothes didn’t wear her, she wore the clothes.

She was in a jumpsuit, a light blue jumpsuit made of a light material, it offered the wind to show a coolbreeze to her covered up body. Allowing her not to be red-hot in the sun, and also not too cold when it was getting to the time of day where a cloud actually covered the big red ball in the sky. Luckily enough, Natalie was good at being eccentric on what she wore, so she was able to pull this look. Her hair was tied up, for once, the sun was making it feel heavy, and when it god greesey, there was a tub of lard on her small head. Therefore, she went out of the shade.

Natalie brought with her some school work, yes, school work in this time of year, however, it was never too cold for the sun to be hot, and the city streets to be packed full of people. The local café’s must have been booming, as there were so many tourists you could barely get out of the hotel. Natalie was sat, on a chair that belonged to a four-seated table, this offered her the chance to put work on chairs and not on the floor, no child would want their report-card to have dirt on it when Mrs. Duke gave it to them, so she decided to be greedy and have a large personal space in such a confined Café.

The café itself was small, like a boutique, it didn’t have a large amount of seats, however it was one of those café’s where people wouldn’t want to go in, it wasn’t the oriental café that los Angeles offered, it was like a common one you find in NY. So, Natalie didn’t look like she was being debonair by taking up so many seats, however, there was still a seat there, beckoning work to be sat there, however, it would then looked like Natalie was being greedy if she put un-necessary work on a chair.

Natalie got to work, beginning the mass amount of report cards that needed to be done for those who were leaving her lessons, there wasn’t many, even Natalie knew she tried to make her Geography lessons fun and easy, with the harsh reality of working so much that your fingers hurt. However, this train of thought was suddenly put to pause, as it sounded like someone had launched themselves into the spare chair…

Nikki Reed, Primary school teacher.

"Whatever you say to me sir, I am sticking with the 'Reed' form of teaching. The idea of 3 strikes and then you get out of the room is much better than giving them an essay about behavioral matters, these children do not have huge attention spans, whilst some of them have the attention to listen to me, none of them actually listen and take it in." Violet argued, her tone low and dark as she power walked down the streets of LA. Her sneakers hiding the loud steps that would be, had she known to wear heels and not sneakers. Dressing down was never a good sign of Karma, but it always made her feel much younger than the age she was, which if asked, she'd say 21.

"No sir, you cannot slump my idea out of the governing pile. Do you not understand the role I have in the school?" Violet insisted, her tone was still dark and her eyes smoldering. The wind swept her hair and the trilby she had on was almost flowing off her beautiful brown hair, one hand on her hat and one hand on holding her mobile pressed strongly to her cheek, making sure she could hear every poisonous word of her work friend. As her 'friend' spoke word that her idea or method of teacher was leaving the governors idea list Violet hissed down the phone. "You will not do this. Because if you do, I will go to higher people and slam the idea in their faces. Do you not understand that you are nothing more than a small fish in the ocean. I on the other hand, am a shark. And I can eat you up." Violet insulted, her phone not next to her head but now in front of her face. "Good bye Head teacher." Violet snapped as she slammed the phone shut.

A sigh escaped Violets chest. Whilst she may have looked good her mood did not express it. "Great, I'm on the streets doing nothing." Violet spoke to herself, various people wound themselves around her, obviously because she was radiating and pulsing anger from every morsel of her body. "I need coffee." She said to herself, and the walk began. The steps were much more slower, she had nothing to drive her to walk faster, nothing more to annoy her and let her have a chance to shout in the center of a busy place. Now, no. Now, Violet walked past people, going through them really, not caring the fact that they are in her way or they may be the nicest people in the world, Violet push past them. "Oh great" Violet said with another sigh escaped her small youngs, the vibration in her pocket sent her heart racing again.

"What is it?" Violet snapped, only because it was a with-held number. "Mummy?" A girl said sadly, instantly Violet regretted how she opened the conversation window. "Sorry dear, mummy's having a rough day, what is it?" Violet asked softly, her steps even slower in case she needed to sprint to her daughters side. The girl spoke word that nothing was wrong with her and she just wanted to catch up. "Dear, I don't have time to talk, I'll speak to you later" Violet said, knowing the unhappy look she would get when she got back home.

Entering a small yet good shaped Café Violet moved toward the nearest table. "Do you mind if I sit with you?" She asked, her small lips spreading out into a small, picture perfect smile. As a waiter approached Violet turned her head "Coffee" she added quickly, before turning to the woman again. A woman she had never, ever seen or met before.

What an interesting introduction. Natalie thought to herself, she wasn’t sure whether she would let this woman sit down, not that she was bothered, however getting on with work was beginning to press in her mind. However, she had all of the time in the world to do it, as many people thought students leave things till last minute, so Natalie decided to do those students who don’t leave things till the last minute, and do their report cards first, whilst talking to this woman.

The woman seemed to be talking on the phone, to a daughter, or some form of offspring. That was apparent enough for Natalie to think happy thoughts of this woman, maternal references aside, Natalie liked the companies of mothers, not speaking to hers herself it made her feel like she was actually in company of someone who could think the same as her mother did, without the bad attitude that her mother actually had.

Natalie smiled, a welcoming smile that hopefully would be empathised with the other woman. “Hello, I’m Natalie, and you are?” Natalie asked, even if she did say, it would have gone straight through one ear, and out the other by the time Natalie blinked. It was something that Natalie occasionally did, not take in information, but that was always a bad quality of hers; being a teacher she had to be learning everything constantly, it was her job.

Her job, yes, the thing that beckoned her to work, to spend time on describing each of her 1000 students in a good light, but at this time, it was more pressing to meet this woman. It wasn’t like Natalie didn’t have friends; however it would be more interesting making friends with someone who is a mother, rather than another single woman who was looking to become a model.

“Yes, it’s alright, sorry for the mess, I didn’t expect someone to come up to my table” Natalie smiled; the statement was polite, nice, and happy hopefully. She didn’t want to come off as a bitch, and she didn’t want to come off as some aspiring young girl, as Natalie knew she looked too young to actually be a lecturer, especially at a University in New York…

Violet smiled politely at the woman. "I'm Violet Heaney" She introduced herself, might as well through in the last name. "I don't normally barge in on people's tables, it's just I've had such a long day trying to make sure my boss doesn't get rid of my method ofo teaching. It's so annoying when men are head teachers" she said with a pause, with no care in the world that this woman may not understand what her job would be or whatever, but mentioning teacher probably gave it away. "I just should go back to teaching degree." Violet said with a bit of a sigh.

But that sigh was replaced with a good sigh, coffee had come back. Caffeine had returned to her grasps and now she could be happy once more. "Thank god for the world of coffee." Violet said with a happy tone. Forgetting the world outside of 4 walls was something she always did well, forgetting the fact that her boss was trying to eradicate all thoughts and ideas of Violets from the school and trying to get her idea away from the governors. What a joy it was to be ignored. "But, as the saying goes. Fight fire with fire." Violet said, a sudden realization of what she was doing.

"Sorry, I'm a big ranter. What was all the paper about?" Violet asked, maybe she was some kind of receptionist. That would have been cool, meeting someone in the world of filing. After all, depending on how their conversations went, this woman could help her with all her homework to sift through, it was all her fault though, and she knew, Violet shouldn't have stayed with children. Should have gone back to the world of 18-20 year olds and teaching degree's. People who wanted to get somewhere in the world just like she did, just just like she is. Instead, she teaches children who insist of having their milk dribble wiped off their faces, or children who want their chicken cutting.

Violet looked out the nearest window and blanked everything for a moment, one of her 'what ifs' moments. If she had gone into teaching degree once more, the pay would be better and shouldn't have to worry about paying the gas bill. Of course the satisfaction would have been taken away with the fact that she wouldn't be able to have that smile, the smile which showed how happy she was working with children. It always felt so natural whenever she was teaching children, never having to argue with them, never have them propose different theories in subjects and have debates. Never would she have to send them out the class room for saying a bad word, nor would she have to ring their parents if they haven't turned in homework when its been asked for more than 5 times.

Something pulled her from deep inside her conscious, something pulled her back to reality. The reality that she would have to stick with the bunches of 30 children, different possibilities that the world could have depending on her teaching, the teaching style she had put forward would have helped them all so much, had her boss not complain to the governors. But no, that did not worry Violet, she wouldn't need a side to argue. The argument was already won, never would she need to go to 'Dillan' about a question, his lines were drawn and so were hers. Had she need something actually signed by the head teacher she would have it gone straight past him. Who needed just one level up? When you can go so much further than that.

"Sorry about that" Violet said with an apologetic tone. "I always seem to get myself stuck in a day dream." She admitted, her smile spreading to show her newly whitened teeth, a life of little 'smokes' at the back of school with her work chums had taken it's toll, but now, they were a pearly white. As if a life of brushing had happened, Violet knew she would always and forever say she brushes twice a day, but a little white lie never killed anyone.

Natalie wasn’t really listening. She had a lapse of concentration, all of the work seemed to getting her attention more than this woman. There was always the argument within her head, friends or work. This argument had been from childhood. When she even was in primary school, Natalie was always one to get work done, and even stay ahead of the class. She had her mother to blame for that, her mother, the woman that pushed and pushed and pushed till there even wasn’t more to push for. Natalie’s mother was always the one to think highly of people, even when they were at their lowest.

The pushing began in primary school, she had been working on a simple art piece, and everybody knows, well, Natalie knows now, that that teaching method was used to see if there were any problems at home. Natalie had a friend, she had a friend that now has published several papers on child psychology, and now she knew when she did that piece of art work it was used to show that she had no problems at home. The art piece consister of leafs, Natalie was talented as a child, and she drew a mass amount of leaves, they would be all over her work, they were her little way to escape the harsh realties, even at such a young age. The leaves in this piece of work consisted of summer, winter, spring, autumn leaves, each a diverse array of colours, and they always used to be the same. The leaves that dropped from a conifer tree, the leaves mesmerised Natalie, their way of being so intricate and unique.

The piece of work was meant to last all of the primary school year, however, Natalie’s mother insisted that she take it home once a week, and work on it at home. Natalie’s mother had everything you could possibly think of, anything that was needed for education anyways. She had a whole office supply room, that used to be the spare bedroom, full of work materials, from paper to cardboard, from ink to paint. Everything a primary school prodigy could use and utilize before the big world of high school. This office space was consistently used by Natalie, she would almost never be out of it. If it wasn’t art it was English papers, resistant materials, it was always something that would take her time up.

This consequentially in Natalie not having many friends in primary school, it began where she would get into some of the parties, children would approach her and therefore invite her to the get together, however as time went on, and on and on, Natalie never attended these parties. And so, each year she would notice that one or two party invites never came to her attention, it wasn’t a nice feeling, it wasn’t a bad feeling either. It was contentment. Natalie had been living like this all throughout her life, as her mother was so strong and persistent; there wasn’t much for young Natalie to do. And therefore she didn’t think that there was any problem in not attending any of these parties, how foolish of one so mature at a young age.

Looking back, Natalie hated how she never went to those parties, this lasted even into high school, even more Natalie would now think. As her mother began to age, her strength over Natalie’s will began to follow with it. Natalie would sometimes resist the urge to do some work, however, her mother was always at home, working from home, she lived there almost twenty-four seven. Resulting in the persistence being there always, as Natalie entered the door she would be bombarded with demands from her mother that she should work to get it out the way, which was naïve statement. Natalie would fall for it on some occasions, however she knew that there was more work, no light at the end of the tunnel.

Natalie’s mind-swamping came to a close, as she noticed that there was no speaking being done. She knew this would happen some time or the other, knowing that when she too went into some form of Day Dreaming, she would never come out of it before it was too late. Luckily enough this time, it wasn’t too late and it was right on time. Natalie seemed to know when she was meant to talk and when she wasn’t, so it was the correct time to snap back into reality, luckily enough.

“Oh, Hello Violet.” Natalie said, her tone was monotone, she didn’t seem quite happy to be snapped back into reality from her harsh past. It was interesting nevertheless that here was someone wanting to be talked to. Natalie was never needy, she didn’t find situations awkward, therefore she didn’t know when to speak, and even when not to. “it’s a pretty name, I bet you’ve heard that plenty of times though…” Natalie laughed, her tone was happy once more, Natalie didn’t need to talk to someone, and however, it was always nice to

“Oh, I’m a lecturer at the university in New York” Natalie stated. Her voice was happy, proud, and nonetheless optimistic. She liked her job, it made her happy that she knew she was shaping the minds of those who wanted to know so much about the world we live on. It was interesting to see all her students faces light up as they learned something new, sometimes that didn’t happen, sometimes she repeated some things getting stuck in two-different motions, the motions being classes.

“What is your occupation?” Natalie asked, her voice was curious, Natalie was curious. However, Curiosity had never killed her before, so she wondered why would it now. She’s lasted this long with asking so many questions it’s got her to where she is now. Therefore, she didn’t know whether she was prying, or just being polite…

Violet's hypothetical alarm bells were ringing. Going off in her head like an ambulance was parked right next to her, loading up it's latest casualty. But this was no casualty, it was a birth. A birth of a friendship and the alarm ringing was the sign to go ahead and take all she could get. This birth was their friendship, Violet could feel it. Like something new had just happened, a sudden rush that everything was okay seemed to wash over her. Taking away the other wishy washy feelings of doubt that her occupation was pointless in a world so controlled by technology, that the world had other people just like her, a lecturer. That was amazing.

Unsure weather to say which profession she should mention first Violet tackled the steps of the conversation one by one, now more than ever would she control herself not to go into a day dream. A reoccurring night mare actually, of the governors holding a large hammer saying 'No' on it and stamping it down on her method of teaching, sending each and every morsel of her body into nothingness, all that she would have worked for was to be thrown down into the drain all by the word 'No.' Children would have their way, allowing chaos to rain in the classroom and having her have no power to control it, no. That couldn't happen. The little brat known as Jimmy wouldn't be sent home anymore. He wouldn't even be forced into silence, he would just be told to calm down repeatedly. Only if the cane came back. That would be a sad day in hell for little ol' Jimmy.

Violet, in her head, was shaking it. That was a cruel thought even for her, that would be a sad day in hell for the both of them. How could she even think that? How could she think that causing the little boy pain would be a good thing? The thoughts swirled in her head, how was she to think that one day if they did in fact bring it back, she would have the ability to whack him with a piece of wood, make tears stream down his face only to say 'I hope you've learned your lesson' That couldn't happen, it felt illegal to even think of it, Violet felt disgusted in herself, how could she do that? Imagining the tons of children she would have had chance to hurt, imagining the fact that some of her university students would have got a spanking with a cane. It felt wrong, like a porno or something a long them lines. Damn, I did it again Violet thought to herself, and sipped her drink once more.

Which occupation? Violet thought, the various ones she could mention, her work as special needs teacher when she was first starting as a teacher? No. She couldn't mention that, not that it was a dark subject, it just felt odd to bring it up into conversation, some people didn't respond well to special needs helpers, Violet had, had a first hand experience. The dark day which she argued with some 'pro-normality' person which argued saying Special needs children should be killed in the whom, so they don't live a life in pain and live differently to everyone in the world. Whilst she argued they are just normal human beings too.

I could mention the degree teaching, the phd. Yeah, that works. Violet thought, deciding to mention the fact that she was once a degree level teacher, and that she has a PHD in English, the one subject that appeals to all, mentioning the fact that she has wrote 4 books on how to teach children English, write like a auto-biographer and then write your own. Violet thought to mention the back ground of how she got there, but it would have been a long story. The tale of the unhappy degree learner being forced to take refuge in the janitors closet whilst everyone was in the cafeteria. Everyone used to think so lowly of Violet, of how she wore clothes that were out of season, that she wore clothes that weren't from Gucci.

But now. Everything in Violets wardrobe was designer, she had been on various listings of people who aren't celebrities, but own more designers than them. At one point she was number one, back when the millionaire people were hard to find. Being a teacher, a job which was recognized to be a 'well paid' job and owning constantly loads of designers was something Violet was recognized. She loved her shoes, which woman couldn't say she didn't? Loving the fact that she was recognized for having 90 pairs of shoes ranging over £600 - 4500 pounds and even more in dollars. Damn damn damn She thought to herself, for what felt like more time than it was she was stuck in her mind. It was only like a second or two, but it felt like longer.

"Sorry, I'm an ex-lecturer, an ex-special needs helper, an ex-business man, and now I'm a primary school teacher. You see, when I was teaching all the 18 year olds degree level things, I felt like they wasn't caring about their education enough, that because they achieved the grades to get into Uni, got their loans and didn't have to come in everyday they just stopped caring about education. So I went to the root of it all, when they are children. So I could make a difference in children's lives so that they grow up in a none-bullying environment and have the best time learning, some people called me naive. But after having a not so great learning environment. I want to make a change. You understand right? I don't sound mental?" Violet said with a light tone, and sipped her coffee again. Her eye brows were raised so the question didn't get forgotten, she couldn't be regarded as crazy just because she had a dream could she?

What a troubled past Natalie thought to herself, she clearly didn’t want to actually say that because it could hurt Violet’s feelings, and that’s something she didn’t really want to happen. With Natalie, caring for people’s emotions comes to her like mothers milk. She didn’t need to ask when she was meant to be blunt, nasty, friverless. It came to her naturally; this was all due to her childhood.

Natalie was compassionate in highschool, she always wanted to be everyones friend, and luckily it worked. Being herself however was something that high school’s harsh reality didn’t accept. She wanted to be herself, she wanted to show the world that she is one of the most intellegant people on this planet, and this was at high school. Natalie had an over-amvbitous stage that allowed her to work hard, stick up to her mother in the process, and therefore gain popularity. Popularity at Natalie’s old high school was something that people thought was like money, people were indespencable and therefore friendships were ruined all around Natalie, to gain the friendship of those above them, in the popularity scale at least.

Natalie wasn’t like them, she didn’t want to stop being friends with someone to get the attention of the leaders of her school, she didn’t want the most popular people to take whitness to how nice she was, and how people instantly became friends with them, that, was something she loathed about her high school. There was the queen, the top of the top of the popularity scale, there was one time when Natalie became friends with her, she was nice and polite just like Natalie, however she had one hell of a dark side. This dark side was her insecurities, she had to look nice for school, she had to dress well and she had to walk around like she owned the place, it was all the harsh realities of being the girl that everybody would like to be. However, Natalie didn’t want to be this girl, she didn’t want to be anything but her self.

This resulted in Natalie and this queen character having a fight, the fight began verbally, Natalie would highlight back qualities, and the girl would throw odourless insults back at Natalie. This verbal fight with seen by all the popular kids, and it was them who would dertime the top of this fight, even if one of them did win eventually. The crowd, friends and foes of each Natalie and the Queen, and therefore the odds were quite even. However, Natalie did have an edge, the edge was Natalie never gave friends up to be where she was, therefore there were more friends than foes on Natalie’s side of the fight.

The fight itself was over very fast, Natalie owned her literally, picking up of 5 years of bad qualities, it was easy to see the winner. That meant Natalie became the Queen. As gossip girl as it sounded, she was the leader of her year, and it only took her months to get to it, when it took the old Queen years to get to that position. When Natalie was Queen it was a new era, however it wasn’t completely because there was always people trying to convert it back to the old ways, where friendships were held like money, and everything was chaotic.

Due to this memory, Natalie never really thought that Natalie’s past were as troublesome as this womans, as Violets. Therefore, she empathised with the woman, but she didn’t completely. Having so much time to mature had left Natalie a grown woman, and therefore she was able to think with so much clariety she almost forgot about opinions.

“Ah, I guess we’re fellow teachers then…” Natalie stated, allowing a smile to wipe itself across her face, laughably. Natalie liked that she was in presence of another teacher, the fellow teachers at the university didn’t seem to talk to one another, they were always too busy with students that would love them to pieces if they shared just an ounce of feeling towards them.

“so, have you ever thought of becoming a lecturer again?” Natalie asked, laughing as she was already one, but showing that she listened to this woman’s past also.

The killer question was asked. Even though there was a laugh to it, it was still asked. Would she go back to it? Would she go to the lecture halls all over again? When it all actually meant something? She couldn't. The satisfying effect of helping children couldn't be more satisfying then knowing that a person passed their degree. Wow, nothing as special as knowing that child can look back at their school life and tell their friends that it was the best time of their life, have them return to them when they too have got PhD's and have a family, not just turn up at dinner and saying 'Hello' and go.

"I plan on doing it, it's just I like the children too much to let them go in a drop. Plus, I would have to apply to a different university, and then move to a new house. I've done it more than 3 times before I don't think me or my daughter could handle it. I moved her only once but I think that was my only chance before she starts getting upset about having to make different friends every time 'mummy' gets a new job. I don't think I could put her under that type of strain once more. It's confusing to think about. It would secure her into a private school and yes, I would deal with much more maturity and not have to wipe their chins if they have something on them." Jenni said with a small unsure smile.

A small sigh escaped Violet's chest. "I don't think I could face turning down this thing I'm doing at work too. You see, my boss hates what I'm doing and this is really me standing up for myself. I don't intend on loosing because he's a sexist pick and I don't want to loose, because he's a really rude man and he has no taste in women, or even teaching. He does it for the credentials and not what it entitles. He likes the pay just because it's higher than mine, we were enemies at school. Of course I'm smarter than he is, and he uses his pay to get at me. Because you can't put a price on knowledge, I fight back against his wife all the time too. We're like shop alcoholics. I have more shoes than her and her husband has more money than I do. It's nothing more than a feud from child hood" she said, pausing again to muster up the facts.

Taking a sip of her coffee Violet started again. "I argued with the governors over the fact that he always changes dates just so I can't make them, my daughter goes to a different school, and because there are no after school clubs were she goes to, I have to drive an hour to pick her up. He makes the meetings half an hour after school time so I can't reach them. I complain complain and complain, and what do I get? A threaten of my job. It annoys me so much that I could actually beat him up in a back ally." Violet finished, her heart race calmed down, just like her breathing. "Which is why I really want to go back, but the children are too nice to me and I can't leave just because I'd be loosing a little war." Violet settled. "What would you do?" It was a perfectly logical question, and if she was smart she'd break it down to apply to her. Hopefully.
