In pain feeling horrible cold, wet, smelling and ill. Alena was lying down in a dranage ditch at the boarder somewhere near Dallas. She did not remember what had happened then things started to come back to her. How she got here she did not know but she could hear cars not far away. Perhaps someone would see her.
Alena tries to move but her whole body still felt numb, as the heat from the sun dried her off she drifted in and out of sleep. Still she could not move. Her head throbbed that was the worst bit the pain in her head, it was stinging as well as giving her periods of darkness. She now could not open her left eye, and it was only with a lot of effort that she was able to move her head and see that she was not far from a bridge. Her backpack was dumped not far from her and her cap tossed in another direction.
Sasaki Jin was heading home from work, about a ten to fifteen minute walk from the trailer park he lived at. His tram conductor outfit was hot in the burning sun, but it didn't bother him as much. The tram may have protected him from its hot rays the entire day, it was a pretty suffocating work environment during the summer. At least here in the open he had fresh air. He walked along the road, staring at the clear sky, inhaling the fresh air, until his nose was unpleasantly surprised with a smell not so fresh. When he looked to see what it was he noticed a woman up ahead, lying what seemed to be unconscious in a ditch. Not a minute did he hesitate and ran over, the stench awful but that was the least of her concerns, there was blood on her face so she must have been in some kind of accident, maybe she was wounded. He kneeled down and felt her neck for a pulse, to his relief she wasn't dead. "Mam'? Are you okay?" and took off his conductor's hat to use it as a fan to ventilate her face.
Her right eye opened up but her left was shut tight.
Her eyes closed again and she tried to move but everything was suggish. Her head oh it hurt! At least she could start to feel her body a little more. She was able to move her fingers, she opened her one eye and groaned.
"Car!.... It hit me!... So hot!"
She looked at Jin and swallowed hard, she thought she had blinked but was it a blink. she was confused as to where she was and nothing would stay still in her one eye. She could not understand, something did not seem right. Had a car hit her.... she could not remember. As the sedative wore off she could feel her arm once more.
She moved her arm and it cracked uncomfortably the bone finally going through the skin. her eyes closed the pain too much, she blacks out again.
Jin frowned in concern at the sight and sound of the arm. It was understandable for a car to have hit her, the people that lived here were poor and angry, there was plenty of crime and people in general didn't really care for each other unless they could somehow benefit. Though it didn't explain why she was covered in stinky filth, as if she had been rolling around in excrements. She passed out, looked like he would have to carry her, though he was cautious. He put his hat back on and searched her body for a passport or some sort of identification. If he could find her insurance card he could call an ambulance. Would save him the trouble of carying her to the public showers and tending her wounds.
Not finding it on her body he started looking around for it, perhaps it had fallen on the ground, but he found something even better, a bag. He searched it for her passport and tried to pronounce her name "Alena Rykov" but had some difficulty with the letter v. Finding her wallet with insurance card he was quick to call 911 and brought the bag back to her body. "Yes hello, Jin Sasaki speaking, I've found an injured woman in a ditch and need an ambulance. She's unconscious" he continued to inform the ambulance about their whereabouts and stayed on the phone with them until they got there, standing upright next to Alena to make sure the ambulance would have no difficulty spotting them.
Alena came to occassionally and gradually she could feel more of the pain in her body. The ambulance arrived and stopped nearby. Two people came out and looked at Jin.
"Do you know anything about how she came to be like this? Or how long she has been here?"
The second ambulance man started to check Alena out he gagged breifly from the smell. He recorded her stats with a pen on the back of his glove then went back to the Ambulance to get a few items. Alena came to breifly. The second man spoke.
"Hello? Can you hear me? can you tell me your name?"
Alena spoke quietly.
"Alena ....... Rykov.... Travelling...... Jakob?"
She had tried to move and a wave of pain hit her knocking her back out again with a heavy sigh. The second paramedic started to try and get a line into her arm. Upon successfully doing this he connected a drip to her and injected some pain relief.
Jin didn't quite understand why these nurses were asking questions and the like. If he had been a nurse first priority would be to load her into the ambulance and get it driving back to the hospital, this 'field work' could easily been done inside the ambulance. Plus they were asking the questions the other way around, Jin found her, all he knew was her name because he had her passport, she was the one that knew what had happened. He sighed through his nose. "I have no idea sir. I was walking home from work when I saw her, but her passport and insurance card are in her bag." He lifted the bag and offered it to the nurse he was talking to. "You'll bring her to the hospital soon right..? That arm doesn't look good at all" he didn't even stop to think the men could call the police and keep him in custody until more was clear about what happened to the woman. When it came to mankind he kind of just hoped the best of people.
The one tending to her wounds started to strap her arm secure in a splint, Alena's face showed signs of pain. The first one took hold of the bag and put it into the ambulance then retrieved a stretcher. The second one gave Jin the fluids bag to hold while they got her onto the stretcher. As she was being placed onto the stretcher a police car pulled up and a police man waked out. He looked at Jin.
"Ok, whats going on here? Did you see what happened? How long has she been in this state and does she have any other items with her?"
The first ambulance man looked up.
"She has a bag in the ambulance, her ID and belongings are inside."
The policeman jotted down the information and looked back to Jin as the ambulance crew continued to put her onto the stretcher.
"So... Where did you find her bag and why are you at this location?"
Jin was a little amazed to see police had arrived and were asking him questions. "Oh I, I live 5 minutes from here, in a small caravan at the trailer park nearby." he lifted the front of his cap like a cowboy would his hat, to show he was a tram conductor for a living, though he also wore a jacket that clearly showed it. "I was walking home from work when I saw her lying there. And the bag was over there" he pointed to where he had found it, his eyebrows raised, now concerned they would hold him responsible for her state of being. "You can.. check with my colleagues if you need an alibi, she told me she got hit by a car but even I have trouble believing that. She's covered in what smells like feces" overal he had a calm voice when talking and a lay-back attitude, he was sure to comply respectfully with the keepers of the law.
"Yes I can smell that. Can I have your address, Full name, Time you finished work, date of birth, ID and phone numbers please?"
The policeman was jotting down what was being said. Alena opened her right eye her head was being secured into a head brace to stop her from moving. She tried to move that paramedic spoke carmly.
"Please try and lie still can you tell me your name?"
"Alena ..... Alena Rykov..... Where am I?"
The paramedics glanced at each other.
"You are by the side of the road what was the last thing you remember before the accident?"
She looked confused her mind was fuzzy. Was it the alians?
"I was at a bar with Freaky Frank. He was going to show me the building I wanted to see..... He.... I don't remember but.... I got hit by a car..... That's all!"
The paramedic nodded and wrote something down again on his glove and looked up to the officer. Alena followed the eyes and screamed. The man! That man! She tried to get away from the police man. The paramedics got out a suringe and placed the liquid inside into the line going into her arm. She started to calm down.
"Yes of course" he took his ID card from his pocket and handed it over. "We don't really have numbers like people with actual houses, people just come and go, but I can tell you the brand of the caravan and renting ID. Mine's rented anyway, until I can afford an apartment" he wasn't proud of his living circumstances, but had no shame for the police, he didn't plan on having any encounters with them in the future. When Alena screamed at him he was dumbfounded, what was she doing that for? He was the one that found her and basically came to her rescue!
This wasn't good for him at all, he had hoped to go home, make himself dinner, have some relaxation and study. If he got arrested that time would be lost. He was already 22 and didn't want to still be a conductor at age 28.
He tried to smile it off "She must be delirious, her skin was burning up"
The policeman nodded as the paramedics slowly made sure that Alena was as comfortable as expected. The policeman took the card off of Jin, he brushed against his skin as he asked.
"Are you sure there is nothing else you can remember?"
That touch sent a blinding image into the back of Jin's mind. Advanced Telepathy He see's himself walking down the street and the woman crossing the road, a car comes along and knocks her and her backpack into gutter where she lies groaning. the policeman is looking right into Jin's eyes.
Alena gradually goes quiet and still. She sleeps gently as the paramedics pick her up and slide her into the back of the ambulance. The door stays open as they work on the woman. The policeman keeps eye contact for a moment longer before writting down the details from the ID onto his note pad.
This was the first time a power was used on Jin, and it was a little overwhelming to see the sudden memory flash before his eyes. He dazed off, as if he had just received a blow to the head but there was no pain. "Whoa, wait" he blinked "I think I saw it happen. I saw a car hit her and she fell straight into the sewer" Something didn't feel right though, Jin was a smart man, and knew he couldn't have possibly seen what he just remembered, he just got off work. With a frown he looked at his cell-phone to look at the time, and not enough had passed for him to have seen the accident. Not to mention he didn't remember how she got from the sewer to the ditch. Something was wrong, and he was getting suspicious she wasn't the only person tampered with. He didn't know of the existence of other specials though, so he figured he could've been drugged.
"Is it okay if I go with her in the ambulance? I want to make sure she's alright" he knew he would have to ask the nurses, but it was still unclear to him if the police wanted to take him into custody.
"It's ok, people who watch accidents happen can go through shock as well..... You can go with the ambulance then I can speak to you further at the other end. Check with the paramedics but if it is the case that you are the only person she has seen then it may be possible that she will be ok with you."
He wrote down something else on his notepad and was offering Jin his ID card back. Inside the back of the ambulance Alena was heavily sedated, her breathing was steady and the paramedic was checking her head injury out
The other paramedic was on the radio letting them know that they were just about to leave the scene and what injuries the young woman had. as Jin gets closer he hears
"Possible head fracture caused by possible bullet or something flat, broken arm. Was KOed at the scene pain relief administrated and sedated. ETA 15 minutes."
Jin gave the officer a quick nod and stuck his ID card back in his pocket, then walked over to the ambulance. Here he overheard one of the nurses about a gunshot. A gunshot? He definitely couldn't remember a gunshot, a large part of his memory was either missing or something really fishy was going on. "Excuse me?" he climbed into the back of the ambulance to get closer to the medics. "Is it okay if I tag along? I want to make sure she's okay. I don't really have anyone in my life, so if it were me I'd like it if my rescuer did the same for me"
He definitely knew he had no partaking in this girl getting harmed, he would never do such a thing. He didn't want anyone thinking otherwise. He looked into both medics their feelings and replaced whatever discomfort they felt with a feeling of safety. "Please?"
The one in the back shut the door securly and the one in the front started off.
"She should be ok, she has been sedated for the time being.
Alena tried to move in her sleep but the strap securing her were too tight. The paramedic kept checking her pulse and breathing.
"I don't suppose that you remember what hit here do you? It's just odd for a car should not have cused the head injury! She should be ok, we just need to figure out why she has blacked out a few times."
The paramedic moved someonf Alena's hair out of her face showing the burn cut scab on her left forehead. It was almost as if something had passed by it skimming off some of the tissue.
Jin agreed at the sight of the head injury, though he didn't know much about wounds and how to recognise them.
"I got home from work, and I saw her lying there.. But I also remember her getting hit by a car, though not specifically her head. And for the sewer lid to be open, why was it open?" he seemed to be talking to himself now rather than the medic, the memory confusing him as it was illogical and missed bits and pieces. "How did she get from the sewer to the ditch... I don't know, maybe the heat has just gotten to me today, I must be imagining things. It's not possible for me to have witnessed any crash anyway because I got out of work at four, and found her at four.seven, I was on the phone with the 911 lady until you guys arrived at the scene, she filed a rapport ready for the medics. I mean is that possible? To imagine things from heat?" He felt his own forehead but it wasn't any hotter than usual. "Could it be I was drugged? This just doesn't make any sense, all of it"
Once the paramedic in the back had double checked that Alena was in a stable condition he turned to the man.
"Quick check on you, see if you have heat stroke, won't mention it if I don't find anything."
The paramedic looked at Jin's eyes, pulse, temprature and the colour face and hands. He looked at the man and smiled.
"Nothing wrong with you lad! You are perfectly fine as far as I can see."
Just then a second police car passed them going in the opposite direction. Alena slept soundly as the paramedic returned to trying to clean up the wound on her head.
"Oh and no charge for that! If you did witness the accident then why is most of the blood dried! Are you sure that you saw it? Are you sure it was not your mind trying to picture what must have happened? If so you need to add gun shot to the list."
He shook his head "I'm not sure of anything" but was still confused on the memory, it was so real, as if it were a real memory. Jin fantasized all the time about having a normal life, he was definitely able to separate memory from fantasy. Nevertheless it was best he didn't worry the medic "But there's a big chance I was imagining things. This area isn't as safe as the cities, so it wouldn't surprise me if there were guns involved." he looked at her, she looked peaceful when asleep. "It's best we ask her about what happened when she's awake in her hospital bed. Maybe they can find out if she has any family or friends here in Texas? She had an accent so there's a chance she's just here on vacation" he looked at her bag, if there was a cellphone inside they could check it and see if anyone tried to call her when she was being attacked. .
They had nearly got to the hospital as the medic cut the shirt on her arm to get to the injury better. The slight move made a stream of blood shoot out. He quickly got a gorze and padding and put it onto the wound pressing hard. He called to the front.
"Tell them she has nicked an artery in her arm!"
He looked over to Jin.
"Ok, when we stop we will be moving fast there is a door beside you exit through that and get to the door. For now, you are a friend."
The ambulance pulled up and the front paramedic quickly got out opening the back doors . Soon they were wheeling her into the emergancy room. Bruises were starting to show on her which meant that she had been in the ditch for some time. The wrist that was not broken had a mark that was going purple. Almost as if someone had hold of the wrist.
"Okay" he answered and left the ambulance as requested when they arrived at the hospital. He was sure to give the medics the space they needed and kept his distance when following after them. He couldn't join them in the elevator though, and not knowing which stage they were going to take her he decided to take a seat in the waiting room. Hospitals. A place of complete torture for specials of his type, for strong emotions just made their way through to him. Mild emotions he would require to focus to be able to sense them, but in the hospital it was as if people were shooting at him with their sorrow and worry.
Overwhelmed by all the sadness his eyes turned watery, he didn't like this at all. He closed his eyes and sat straight up, then started focussing on blocking these unwanted emotions, the only way he knew how: making himself feel careless and happy.
