Over a decade ago, this RPG was begun as a Heroes (the TV series) role play. As the show progressed, we loosely followed the main volumes (seasons) with the main bad guys and plots but took creative licenses to retell the story in our own way, using our own characters. This created a unique setting wherein fans of the TV show were able to join and have a basic idea of a site-wide direction without the burden of following a strict guide for progress. So, we had a big explosion over NYC and we had Building 26 and Arthur Petrelli, but we did it differently. We did it our way!
Now, as Heroes has become a distant memory, the forum has slowed and we determined we needed to reinvent our premise to correspond to the growing disparity of membership. This meant changing things up from being Heroes-focused only to widening our horizons and letting more of the world seep in. The only way to do this and not throw away a decade of awesome stories and characters who have grown with us over that time was to simply subdue the importance of Heroes canons, open up the door to other TV canons of similar genres, and fully embrace our history. This means site history is actually very important to acknowledging the present of our new universe. And in that vein, below is a brief overview of the site impacting events that happened over the last decade on Heroes: the RPG.
...there was a mutation among humanity that began to bring about gradual changes in the landscape of history. One man, Adam Monroe, an immortal who healed his wounds and lived centuries, was one of the first known but there could have been others before. Truly, there could have been many, but that one man in his arrogant manner moved the pieces on the chess board of existence to meet his whims. He lived for himself, mostly, but spread his seed to others and the populace of those known as Special grew whether by his effort alone or the other anonymous and mostly hidden rest.
In the nineteen-sixties, a scientific team learned of Specials and determined to investigate their mutations. They set up a facility in Coyote Sands, a place where families were sent and experimentations recorded. None were hurt in the charge of Dr. Chandra Suresh, none that we know of, yet his methods cast a fear on those whom he set his designs and in the catastrophe that came from their failed experimentation came the birth pains of an organization set to ensure this never happened again: The Company.
Twelve people, men, and women, some who had experienced Coyote Sands, some who had not; these twelve set themselves up to protect themselves and the world from any harm. They sought to protect Specials from experimentation and the populace from the dangers inherent in humanity among Specials who would abuse their powers for their own gain. Abilities among mutations brought additional power to inflict pain, to cause chaos and instill fear. The Company founders wanted simple anonymity among the world's societies and thus, their goal was set.
Their methods changed with experience to meet the demands their Company viewed as non-negotiable. They incorporated a prison and discovered how to subdue abilities within their walls. They employed people as agents, calling "one of us and one of them" as the balance required to ensure justice and fairness for all. They captured Specials, implanted tracking devices beneath their skin and erased their memory of the episode so that they could track them anywhere in the world. In this manner they could find anyone at any time and of any Special went beyond their bounds, they could capture them and incarcerate them indefinitely without anyone on the outside any the wiser.
It seemed a good plan; a solid plan. Thus the founders went their own way. Some married and gave birth to new generations of Specials. Others hid in seclusion. All defied any authority other than their own, and when the next generations began to rise on their own, the Company began to know fear. Their numbers were exceeding what they could count, but they employed more agents and took more care, thinking themselves above others and able to handle any threats on their own.
Whats more, the next generation knew nothing of the dangers their own did, and the great secrecy of their Company would not permit them to speak. In this lay a flaw no one expected, for as sons learned they could fly and daughters discovered they were immortal, chaos began to break out in all manner of places, not the least of which was an obscure town of Odessa, Texas.
Here, teens from twelve years old to graduates began to discover they held extraordinary power within their grasp. They gathered, a few, like their predecessors, to form a place of sanctuary for their kind. They called it simply, The Hideout. An old office building in an abandoned part of town housed them, and the group grew from seven to over a hundred; some leaving their homes to find friendship with those who understood them, others leading dual lives among their families.
The explosion of a teen populace in Odessa did not go unnoticed and the Hideout was attacked on occasion by those who did not understand them, while others attacked to use their power for their own gain. Heroes arose from those times, one a boy named James Johnson who would later call himself Firewall and attack the streets as a vigilante for justice. Others, including the granddaughter of one of the Company founders, Claire Bennet, chose a darker path of indifference. More came and went from that place, and though it stands almost depleted of tenets now, it is still a staging ground for many restless youth.
During this time of discovery, New York City saw an explosion in the sky. The story was covered in the media as a natural event averted, but the Company knew the truth as one of its sons exploded as the other tried to keep the city from falling by taking him in flight above. Angela Petrelli was unhappy at her sons who diverted the acceptable loss of .07% of the population of the world. She foresaw it as gain that her son might explode and held it against them that it did not. She withdrew as her elder son's burns marred him and the estrangement of his wife deepened his desires for alcohol. While the younger brother healed his burns he could do little for his addiction and waited for time to heal the rest.
But damage had been done and Adam Monroe sought his chance to take down the Company he had once had a hand in aiding. He gathered many Specials for an attack on the NY facility, among them a brainwashed grand-daughter of Angela's, Claire Bennet. The young woman's abandonment issues were played on by Adam who convinced her the need to care for no one as the pain of loss in her long, immortal life would be too great a burden. Claire was trained by Adam and his accomplices to ignore pain and wield weapons of destruction, manipulating her to belief that the Company needed to be destroyed for the good of them all.
Claire helped take down the Company, along with the help of men like Gabriel Grey. Sylar, as he is better known, killed one of the founders (Bob Bishop) and took out the Level 5 containment, freeing its prisoners to the streets - at least those who survived his murderous intent. And where the Company attempted to recover once after Adam Monroe decimated the number of founders left, it could not do so the second time it was attacked and the great Company fell with her the sole surviving member of the founders. But also, Adam fell in the hands of a man called Legion, and the world was finally rid of its errant immortal who tried once too often to play God.
So while Angela wondered what course next to take, a new threat in the way of Pinehearst came to the forefront. Angela discovered with dis-ease that her long thought dead husband, Arthur, was actually alive and maneuvering to get the formula that the twelve founders had once sought to use to create Specials and a grand new society. They had broken the formula into pieces and hidden the Catalyst so that no one person of them could determine to make that effort again. Arthur, however, knew their secrets and rose on the wings of stolen powers to gain the formula.
He stole the pieces of the formula with the help of others and manipulated the son of the scientist who experimented on those in Coyote Sands to make it for him. In his grand-daughter, he discovered the catalyst and kidnapped her to use it to create his supreme society ruled by evolved humanity. His son, Peter, attempted to stop him, only to have his power stolen and the father forever giving him disapproval. Arthur, however, manipulated his eldest son, Nathan, into helping him for a time.
In the end, Arthur used his stolen powers and with the aid of Peter's kidnapped girlfriend who had extreme amplifying abilities, Arthur began to kill all those who were normal in the world. Peter was able to break free of his confines with the aid of a friend (Adara Summers) and injected himself with the now completed formula. He went to his father and with the help of his brother, killed Arthur to keep him from mass genocide. Since then, Peter's powers have not been the same though he did recover the one he always had with the ability to emphatically mimic other's abilities, though his control has varied.
In the meantime, Angela went underground while the rise of threats continued. Her own son, Nathan, the eldest who recovered from his addiction only to betray humanity to his father then turned to find vindication through opposing means. He gave files to the president revealing to the US government the existence of Specials. An agency was formed under the command of a man named Emile Danko. President Holand instructed his Homeland Security Secretary to be his liaison, Rebecca Hudson, to this Building 26 Operation, keeping him immune to the accusation. So while Ms. Hudson worked with Senator Petrelli to temper Danko's methods, they also brought in hundreds of Specials and put them in an induced coma state until such a time a "cure" could be found.
This, too, was not meant to survive. An assault of Specials overtook the building and freed many, though many more died in the attempt. Danko was scorned as a failure and took to mercenary work, keeping largely in hiding while biding his time. Rebecca Hudson disavowed any knowledge of what that facility was to the public but rose on the wings of her success in government to win the next Presidential Election. This, of course, was aided by a new terrorist threat that thrust the need for someone who understood Homeland Security to be the nation's leader. Reba chose Nathan as her running mate, and together in the office they now meet the new threat to society as they know it better than most any others.
Nemesis: A group of like-minded Specials with more ideals toward Evolutionary Supremacy. They used toxic gas in Washington, D.C., planting bombs in the subway, White House and under the Capital Building. Many were killed that day at the dawn of Nemesis, but it was far from the end. Danko's mercenaries were taunted in this attack and a small skirmish came on its heels, but to little avail except more lives were lost on humanity's side. Then on New Year's Day, 2013, Nemesis created the largest coordinated attack on the world by setting off bombs in 12 strategic cities around the world simultaneously. The world reeled in fear and Nemesis continued its barrage on the world, but much more was happening that could not be seen due to this very public, very demanding distraction. As it coordinated attacks threatens on the West Coast, the government along with Angela's rising of the new Company (under the guise of the Texas Cardboard Empire) and Danko's men all try to stop them, but not a single one of these agencies would work together.
So much distrust was nearly the world's undoing. In the end, Nemesis nearly succeeded in their quest to make the world into their image and bow at the feet of Alpha supremacy. However, groups of resistance did successfully form, including the Liberators; a group of grown-up kids from the old Odessa hideout along with other, fresh new faces bent on defending humanity from the threat Nemesis presented. Under the leadership of David Johnson, the Liberators were able to quell many of the attacks, including some abroad on that fateful New Year's Day. It was in cooperation with the Liberators that Nemesis' leader, Yomin Breise, was finally killed trying to set off a biological weapon in NYC that would have killed a large portion of the population while making any survivors Alphas. Many of the Nemesis agents were captured and taken to a secret facility known only as The Citadel where they later escaped under the new leadership of Maria Coffos.
But while the world thought that Nemesis was dead and Maria and her agents rose to continue rogue terrorism in smaller arenas, the quieter, more sinister threat loomed in the shadows. It had been working while Yomin distracted the world with his terror and was now poised to do the real damage. Nemesis Sovereign, the super secret part of the organization, had set up leaders in governments around the world and was set to make legal changes in favor of Alphas and encourage their growth and supremacy. They had even replaced the US president with a shapeshifter from their own organization, and unbeknownst to Nathan Petrelli, is influencing him as well after his recent election win.
But Nemesis was not expecting the what came next. Claire Bennet publicly outed the existence of their kind and now the world knew that super-powered individuals existed among them. Nemesis was then seen as the real threat it was, but since the world thought them to be all but gone it mattered little. Instead, the newest threat came in the form of public opinion. While many accepted evolved human beings, now called "Evos", many more feared them. It is a division happening all over the world and the greatest threat to Evo Supremacy is no longer within their own kind serving in organizations like the Liberators. No, now it is coming from without as people take up their proverbial pitchforks and go on witch hunts. It's a very disheartening time for Evos, but it could very well be a turning point for the world.
And once again, history is being written....
